Literacy at Home Support Resources
Reading
There a number of ways to support your child at home with reading.
Provide lots of opportunities at home for reading by having magazines, comics, atlases, instructions, recipes or messages available.
Use local libraries, bookshops or charity shops, helping your child to choose books that they are interested in/enjoy.
Discuss the books your child is reading. (Helpful link: Discussing what you read - English - Learning with BBC Bitesize - BBC Bitesize )
If your child has research/study work for school, they may need help. It may be useful to help them narrow the search by finding the relevant book, chapter or website section together.
Encourage your child to write notes in their own words rather than copying straight from the text.
Access reading through e-books and audio books.
Don’t impose books on reluctant readers. Look for other things they can read.
If reading out loud is a struggle, then read with your child or make sure they use Read & Write ‘Text-to-speech’ function.
